Women Migrant Workers
Working with several mainstream media outlets, we produce videos and pen articles for and about women migrant workers in Mainland China. In doing so we hope to educate the workers and the public and improve the former’s status in society.
We have rolled out projects including a website in collaboration with Tencent QQ, China’s biggest online media company, as well as a series on occupational disease. We have also produced music videos for Duan Yu, a migrant worker who also is a singer, bringing her story and the topics she cares about to a mainstream audience. We regularly organize activities to raise the social status of female migrant workers. Currently we are working on a new website, Jiemeiwang.
Eradicating Domestic Violence: The “Knock, Report and End Domestic Violence” Campaign
Half the Sky launched two PSAs (Public Service Announcements) on the International Day for the Elimination of Domestic Violence in 2011, which was held on November 25 of that year. The PSAs were produced with the assistance from Bleu Arc Pictures, a production studio, and in collaboration with UN Women, public transport roadshow and Internet providers. They were designed to raise awareness of and prevent domestic violence.
Through the PSAs we hope to provide references for action and convey the message that everyone of us can intervene by knocking on the door.
Meanwhile, we understand that the campaign has to take roots at the community level to be truly effective. Since December 15 we started organizing interactive theater productions that allowed the audience to participate and put on their thinking caps as to how we can bring domestic violence to an end. We also put in place other activities, such as photo exhibitions and by working with the mainstream media, to spread the message.
